-King Street Sounds 25th Anniversary-

25 Years of Paradise

Life-affirming music from a true master of house

Iconic New York label “King Street Sounds”, founded in 1993 by Hisa Ishioka, helped define the sound of house music as it evolved from its soul, disco and garage roots. From Blaze to Masters At Work, Dennis Ferrer, David Morales, Mood II Swing, The Ananda Project, Ron Trent, DJ Pierre and Kerri Chandler, the legends that have stamped their music on King Street’s grooves are fundamental to the evolution of house.

Joe Claussell was instrumental in the house explosion in early 90’s New York at the helm of Dance Tracks Records NYC. As such, he makes for a fitting choice to help toast the mighty legacy of “King Street Records”.

“I am honored to be asked by Hisa to be a part of a story that is not just important but also a very special occasion, celebrating of two and a half decades of quality music,” says Claussell.

Promising to reflect on his own story and that of King Street as well as weaving in the sounds of now and the near future, Claussell will bring his unmistakable verve and passion to the decks on the Studio X Floor. Alongside him are Japanese house all stars; DJ Nori, Soichi Terada, Toshiyuki Goto, DJ KAWASAKI, Dazzle Drums and more. Plus, Meisa Fujishiro, whose latest photographic documentary『90 Nights』aroused interest, will be bringing her visual chronicles to the venue.

“In all this should be a very special evening,” adds Claussell. “One filled with wonderful memories, rekindling friendships and love.”

– Joe Claussell

– Message from Joe Claussell –

As an artist, I’ve made conscious efforts in not accepting music projects that would keep me in a box-hence is the reason I don’t do as many as I’ve done in the past.

As my love for house music will never fade, I cannot deny, however, that at times it seems like the music has not progressed as far as its potential. However, as much as I set my sights on moving forward artistically, I do think that there are certain situations that come about where revisiting the past makes sense. Performing for the upcoming King Street Sounds 25thAnniversary is definitely an occasion that I could not refuse to be a part of.

The early 1990’s, was a period in time that is widely considered to be the golden age for house music. Being part owner and music director of Dance Tracks Records NYC, afforded me the opportunity to see first-hand a growing music trend that was becoming very popular. Back then music was not only very exciting, but it was also fresh and spiritual. It wasalso during this time where I witness the birth of many prominent record labels that centered their sound around house music.  Amongst them was none other than “King Street Sounds”.

Inspired by the late Paradise Garage, it’s no secret as to where the label got its name from. Led by Label Boss and comrade Hisa Ishioka, “King Street” not only prided itself on producing some of house music’s most memorable records, but they were also on a quest to achieve greatness. However, there’s no doubt that it became what it is with the help and contributions of some of House music’s leading producer/ DJ’s, such as Blaze (Josh Milan and Kevin Hedge), Kerri Chandler, MAW (Louie Vega and Kenny Dope Gonzalez), Lil Luis, DJ Basil, DJ Pierre, The Ananda Project, Ron Trent, Big Moses, Dennis Ferrer, Timmy Regisford, David Morales, Roland Clark, Mood II Swing, Studio Apartment. And artist in the likes of Kenny Bobien, Stephanie Cook, Urban Soul, Kimara Lovelace, Monday Michiru, Mondo Grosso and Yukihiro Fukutomi, just to name a few. With such talent at their disposal “King Street Sounds” became a major player in the house music world, all the while earning the respect and admiration from its piers and fans alike.

I am honored to be ask by Hisa to be a part of a story that is not just important but also a very special occasion. Celebrating of two and a half decades of quality music, as well as paying homage to the path in which was chosen to arrive at this point and time is where I shall be.

I must say that I am also looking forward to playing alongside of DJ Nori. Nori (who needs no introduction) is a great music mind and DJ who is loved and respected in and outside of Japan. Also joining us are husband and wife duo and future house music saviors Dazzle Drums. And if all that wasn’t enough, in the house and on the decks, will be the one and only Toshiyuki Goto, with DJ KAWASAKI, Daisuke G and DJ AK.  And last but not least Soichi Terada (Live) and Visuals by Meisa Fujishiro.

Musically Speaking, I will be telling my own story by mostly going back into time to pay homage to the house music that I loved, as well as gave me inspiration during my years at Dance Tracks as a Dancer DJ and fan of the music-all the while infusing sounds of now and future into my story thus aiming summon the spirit and vibration from those wonderful moments spent playing music at the dearly missed and beloved Yellow Japan – The mother club of house back in the day in Tokyo Japan.

In all this should be a very special evening, one that filled with wonderful memories, rekindling friendships and love.

We look forward to having you with us.
